Ridge of the Rockies - Santa Fe to Taos NM

We left Santa Fe in gorgeous weather (continued all day), and after a gradual climb out of the city enjoyed a very long (around 10 miles) downhill run (mostly on Avenida Monte Sereno).  Shortly after the first rest stop at 25 miles, the tough climbing began as we headed into the Sangre de Cristo mountains on the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway.  Grades were often 10 or 11%, and went on for miles.  Fortunately the temperatures were not real high, and the highest elevation was about 8500 feet, so not enough to bring on altitude sickness.  We will eventually be getting into some higher passes in Colorado, though nothing above 12000 feet.

Total climbing for today: 6200 feet

We thought maybe the tough climbing was over at this point, but there was more to come

Mike (in NM jersey) joined Jack and I for the first 35 miles before heading back home to Santa Fe

This shows the road we came up on one of the long climbs

At the lunch stop - from this summit we had 16 miles of mostly downhill to the motel in Taos

  1. Particularly like the first photo and the last one, too.

And it does seem that Lon and Susan or trying to gently introduce y'all to the riding -- first day and second day, each essentially with the riding mostly done by lunch -- of course, I don't know what time you had lunch.
