Ridge of the Rockies - Montrose to Grand Junction CO

We have been blessed with excellent weather on this tour.  Today's route was another demanding one, with an extended climb to the Grand Mesa at over 10,000 feet.  By "extended", I mean a total of over 20 miles of 3% - 7%.

The scenery in the Colorado Rockies is stunning, which takes your mind off (sort of) the strenuous nature of propelling a bicycle up mountain grades.

I picked up a staple in my rear tire due to a bunch of them strewn across the shoulder - likely a casualty of supplies not being secured on a truck.  I noticed a slow leak about 8 miles before the lunch stop, and added air 3 times before the tire went completely flat half a mile from lunch.  The support crew kindly fixed my tire while I ate.  Another rider picked up two staples, one of which ruined his tire.

So far the altitude has only caused minor sinus issues - a little bit of bleeding that has now cleared up, and some shortness of breath.  I am getting acclimated to the higher altitudes.  Colorado has some nasty black flies and mosquitoes at high altitudes.

  1. Love the photo of the creek / small river. Also the photo of the calm pond, reflecting the sky, with the textures of the tall, thin trees in the foreground and the snow-capped mountains touching the clouds in the background.

  2. Also love the reflections in the last photo ... each part of the country has differences. Hope the mosquitoes aren't the B-52 types we had in Florida!

    Huggz from the neighborhood,
