Ridge of the Rockies - Pagosa Springs to Durango CO

This was an 86 mile day with about 3800 feet of climbing, so by PAC Tour standards it was an active recovery day.  The toughest climb was probably the 4 miles before the lunch stop, on county road 240 in Colorado.  It was not super steep - I'm guessing around 5% - but it was over 90 degrees F and there was no shade.

The scenery is excellent, and we had another clear day, with just some puffy cumulus clouds.  Following a 2.5 mile climb out of Pagosa Springs, we had some fast downhills (not steep), along with rolling terrain before climbing up toward Chimney Rock National Monument.  The 16 miles after lunch were mostly downhill, punctuated by a couple of minor climbs.  Some riders are commenting that their favorite road sign is a warning sign to truckers of a steep downhill ahead.

Stray afternoon showers are always a possibility in the mountains, so we could experience those tomorrow as we head north on US 550 to Montrose through the San Juan National Forest.

  1. Like that sinuous road photo and the second to last photo -- for the scenery, and the sinuous road photo looks like it would be fun to ride -- IF one is in cycling shape.

  2. Beautiful scenery .... hot ... here, also ... but at least can sit under the White Ash tree for shade or go sit on the concrete garage floor .. as we wait for the AC guys to arrive to replace some wiring .. inside the house to downstairs in what I call the guts of the house . .. AC and heat room..
All fans are on .. just might disappear into the garage for a bit.

    Stay safe,

    Peggy
